Underbelly of Silicon Valley
The year is 1967 California's love and peace movement meets machismo and Dixie Peach resistance. In Mountain View, the heart of the computer-age miracle yet to come, a washed-up private investigator continues in a downhill blur of tobacco, cheap women and spent whiskey. A nose for criminal behavior is wasted on trivial matters petty theft, wayward spouses and anything involving the Mexican shantytown called Castro City, a city within a city. His home? A leather couch in a disheveled office above the Town Club Tavern on Castro Street.
Initially, the private dick gig was to put the hurt on the gringo, but now Manny Valdez finds himself the white man’s benevolent servant. He’s a widower, and his only daughter lives with her grandmother in the same squalid hovel he grew up in. The family shack is across the street from the mysterious mansion belonging to the Castros, once wealthy recipients of a sizable Mexican land grant in the 1800s. At one time, nearly 9,000 acres, all of today's Silicon Valley, was part of this empire. Now the decaying mansion and Castro City are the last remnants of this bygone era.
By any measure, Manny and the sole remaining Castro, an aging matriarch living alone in the mansion, are dismal failures. However, salvation arrives for Manny when Bernard Balsford, a distinguished lawyer with massive real estate holdings, hires him to find his missing daughter, who’s “Run off with a certain spic, er, Mexican, Chicano, Latino or whatever else you people call yourselves these days.”
Manny gladly accepts the easy assignment, only to find himself immersed in an underworld greaser scene, a growing hippie movement, San Francisco’s sordid drug cartel, Bay Area biker gangs, kidnappers and murder. His case, his future, the Castro family legacy and the white man’s insatiable greed are set for collision. Castro City will keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s a story of one man’s redemption, his people and the Bay Area’s illustrious past.

Castro City eBook Glenn PalmedoSmith Denise Logsdon Reviews
This was a fast moving novel that feels like a movie, with action, drama and mystery all rolled into one. The author's descriptive style draws you into the scene so well, fully engaging you in the story, from beginning to end----a fast and satisfying book that I didn't want to put down.
I look forward to the author's next book and hope this work might become a series about the life of Manny Valdez!
Castro City grabbed me and I couldn't put it down. Rich details of the Castro City roads, neighborhoods and its many denizens propelled this building detective story. I could feel and smell the salty Northern California ocean air and the dusty back rooms of the no named bars. All the while, the elite maintained their dominance through corruption and intimidation. Very fast moving and visual. And knowing that the timeless struggles and dark beauty of Manny Valdez's Castro City would change forever by the economic explosion that would be Silicon Valley! I can't wait to read the next volume of the Manny Valdez saga.
I read a lot of detective and mystery fiction. I enjoy a well formed, or better said dysfunctional anti-hero detective. Castro City has all the patina of a Raymond Chandler novel. The author takes me to an area of Northern California in the 1950's I know nothing about. It is very detailed and authentic. You can really feel that specific time and place. Manny, the detective, will satisfy the die hard detective genre fan.
There is the classic femme fatale, A secret some will do anything to keep in the shadows.
This reminds me of all the pulp novels I read and loved growing up.
So if you like detective faire, I think you will enjoy this novel.
